Acknowledgement cards: who, when, and what to write

After the service comes the quietest task: thanking people. Convention keeps it manageable — you do not write to everyone who attended, only to those who did something.

Who gets a card

People who sent flowers or donations · brought food or ran errands · served as pallbearers, readers or musicians · the officiant (with honorarium if not already given) · anyone who traveled far. Attendance alone, signatures in the guest book, and social-media condolences do not require a card — a general printed acknowledgement in the program covers them ("The family gratefully acknowledges every expression of sympathy").

When

Within two to three weeks of the service is the convention — and nobody counts. A card in week six from a grieving family is received exactly as warmly.

Wording that works

Two sentences suffice. Printed base + one handwritten line is the standard format:
Printed: "The family of Margaret Wilson gratefully acknowledges your kind expression of sympathy."
Handwritten adds: "Your lilies were her favorite — thank you." · "The casserole fed us for three days when nothing else got done." · "She would have loved that you were the one to carry her."

Divide the labor

Address the envelopes as a family around one table in a single evening — it goes five times faster and, families consistently report, turns into an unexpectedly warm hour of storytelling. Our memorial set includes matching printed acknowledgement cards, four per sheet, ready for the handwritten line.

Frequently asked questions

Do we send thank-you cards to everyone who attended the funeral?

No — only to people who actively helped: flowers, donations, food, roles in the service. The program's printed acknowledgement covers general attendance.

How soon must funeral thank-you cards go out?

Two to three weeks is customary, but later is completely acceptable. Grief outranks etiquette.

What do we write for a memorial donation?

Name the cause: "Thank you for your gift to the Heart Foundation in Robert's memory — it honors exactly what he cared about."
